What Is a Debt Management Program? A Credit Counselor Explains

When people hear the phrase debt management program, there’s often confusion, hesitation, or even fear attached to it. As a credit counselor, I see this every day. Many individuals know they’re overwhelmed by debt, but they don’t fully understand what their options are or what credit counseling actually does.

I recently had the opportunity to speak publicly about debt management programs, and it became clear that there’s a real need for straightforward education around this topic.

My goal here is simple: to explain what a debt management program is, how credit counseling works, and why budgeting and education are central to long-term financial stability.

In my work with clients in Atlanta and across Georgia, high interest rates and rising everyday costs have made credit card balances harder to manage. If you’re feeling stuck, you’re not alone  and the good news is there are structured options that can help you regain control without shame or judgment.

At American Consumer Credit Counseling (ACCC), we work with clients nationwide, including here in Georgia, to provide education, budgeting support, and guidance on whether a debt management program (DMP) is the right fit.

What Is a Debt Management Program?

A debt management program (DMP) is a structured repayment plan designed to help individuals pay off unsecured debt such as credit cards more efficiently and affordably.

When someone enrolls in a debt management program through a nonprofit credit counseling organization:

  • A certified credit counselor works with them to review their full financial picture
  • Create a realistic monthly budget
  • Consolidate eligible unsecured debts into one monthly payment and
  • Work with creditors to reduce interest rates or fees when possible

The goal of a debt management program is not just to pay off debt, but to create structure, reduce financial stress, and help individuals regain control of their finances.

Georgia residents who are struggling with credit card debt can speak with a certified credit counselor to explore options and build a plan. If you’ve already tried to manage it alone, a structured program may help reduce stress and create a clear payoff path.

The Role of Credit Counseling

Credit counseling is often misunderstood as simply “getting out of debt,” but it’s much more than that.

As a credit counselor, my role is to educate, guide, and support clients through informed decision-making without judgment. Credit counseling includes:

  • Reviewing income, expenses, and debt
  • Education on how credit works
  • Guidance on budgeting and money management and
  • helping clients understand which options make the most sense for their situation.

Why Budgeting Matters

One of the most important components of any debt management program is budgeting. Budgeting is not about restriction it’s about awareness and intention.

A realistic budget:

  • Shows where money is actually going
  • Creates space for consistent debt repayment
  • Helps prevent future reliance on credit and
  • Builds financial confidence over time

At American Consumer Credit Counseling, the focus is not only on helping people get out of debt, but on equipping them with the knowledge they need to stay financially stable. Debt relief without education is temporary. Education creates lasting change.

If you’re struggling with credit card debt or unsure where to start, speaking with a certified credit counselor can provide clarity. Financial progress doesn’t come from quick fixes it comes from structure, support, and understanding how to work with your money instead of against it.

Debt Management Program FAQs for Georgia Residents

Q: Can I enroll in a Debt Management Program if I live in Georgia?
A: Yes. Georgia residents including those in Atlanta and surrounding communities can enroll in a Debt Management Program through a nonprofit credit counseling organization like ACCC (eligibility depends on debt type and individual financial situation).

Q: Is credit counseling available to Georgia residents if there isn’t an office nearby?
A: Yes. ACCC can support Georgia residents through phone/remote appointments, allowing you to receive counseling without needing an in-person visit.

Q: What types of debt are typically included in a Debt Management Program?
A: A DMP typically includes eligible unsecured debts such as credit cards and some personal loans. Secured debt (like auto loans) and most student loans are usually not included.

Q: Will a Debt Management Program stop collection calls?
A: In many cases, once accounts are enrolled and creditor proposals are accepted, collection calls may decrease but outcomes vary by creditor and account status.

If you’re struggling to pay off debt, ACCC can help. Schedule a free credit counseling session with us today.
