Texas EBT Alert: Skimming Cases Up 300% — Why Seniors Are Losing Benefits Overnight

If your grocery money suddenly disappeared overnight, would you know what happened—or how to get it back? That’s the reality many seniors in Texas are facing as EBT skimming scams surge across the state. Reports show millions of dollars in SNAP benefits have already been stolen, often drained within hours of being deposited.

For older adults relying on fixed incomes, this isn’t just frustrating—it’s devastating. Even worse, many victims don’t realize they’ve been targeted until their accounts are empty. Here’s what’s really happening behind this alarming trend—and how to protect yourself.

What’s Behind the Surge in EBT Skimming

EBT skimming is a type of fraud where criminals steal your card information using hidden devices. These devices are often placed on grocery store terminals or gas station card readers. When you swipe your EBT card, the skimmer captures your card number and PIN. Criminals then clone your card and drain your benefits remotely.

Seniors are often the hardest hit by EBT skimming scams. Many rely heavily on SNAP benefits, making them attractive targets for criminals. Scammers also assume older adults may be less familiar with evolving fraud tactics. In some cases, seniors use the same PIN for long periods, making accounts easier to access.

How Criminals Drain Accounts Overnight

One of the most shocking aspects of EBT skimming is how fast the theft happens. Criminals often wait until benefits are deposited at the start of the month. Then they immediately withdraw or spend the funds before the victim even notices. Some thefts occur in different states or even overseas, making recovery difficult.

This isn’t just a minor inconvenience—it’s a nationwide crisis. Federal investigators estimate SNAP fraud losses could reach up to $12 billion annually. In Texas alone, millions of dollars have already been stolen from families. Many victims lose hundreds of dollars in a single incident.

Why Getting Your Benefits Back Is So Difficult

Unfortunately, recovering stolen benefits isn’t always easy—or even possible. Federal protections that once allowed replacement of stolen benefits have expired in some cases. That means many victims are left without reimbursement. Even when replacements are available, the process can take weeks or months.

There are a few red flags that could signal EBT skimming has occurred. Here’s what you should be looking out for…

  • Unexpected transactions or balance drops are the most obvious warning signs.
  • You may also notice purchases in locations you’ve never visited.
  • If your card stops working or your PIN suddenly changes, that’s another clue.

The good news is that there are ways to reduce your risk. Always cover the keypad when entering your PIN at checkout and avoid using machines that look damaged, loose, or unusual.  Change your PIN regularly—especially before your benefits are deposited. Additionally, you can also monitor your account frequently to catch suspicious activity early.

Why This Threat Isn’t Going Away Anytime Soon

EBT skimming isn’t just a temporary spike—it’s part of a growing wave of digital fraud. Criminals are becoming more sophisticated and better organized. At the same time, many EBT systems still rely on outdated technology like magnetic stripes. Until stronger protections like chip cards are widely adopted, the risk will remain high. That’s why awareness is now one of the most powerful tools seniors have.
