How financially literate are you? According to a report from the Global Financial Literacy Excellence Center, the average American scored just 48% on a financial literacy test. Some groups scored as low as 37% in certain areas. When it comes to financial management, knowledge is wealth. A financial literacy course may be just what you need.

There are so many resources available to level up your financial literacy and grow your wealth. Plus, many many financial literacy courses are free. These 6 courses will teach you basic money management and will drill down on important topics like Roth IRAs, 401(k)s, stocks, bonds, certificates of deposit, and eliminating credit card debt.

1. McGill Personal Finance Course

Taught by professors from McGill University’s Desautels Faculty of Management, this free eight-module course will teach you everything from budgeting to borrowing, real estate, and beyond. In just a few hours, you will receive an attestation of completion and skills that you can apply to your own financial goals.

2. Purdue University’s Planning for a Secure Retirement

If you need help with retirement planning, Perdue University offers a free course. The 10-module course covers retirement expenses, social security, Medicare, employer retirement programs, and more. These modules will help you prepare for retirement with confidence.

3. Khan Academy’s Personal Finance Classes

Khan Academy offers a free personal finance class that is geared toward students. You’ll learn about how to pay for college, saving, budgeting, taxes, housing, car expenses, and more. These courses will help participants gain a foundational understanding of personal finance topics through a collection of articles and videos.

4. Duke University’s Behavioral Finance Course

According to Duke University, “Behavioral finance is the study of these and dozens of other financial decision-making errors that can be avoided, if we are familiar with the biases that cause them.” The free Behavioral Finance Course aims to help participants avoid financial mistakes and make better choices. After all, many of the financial decisions we make are based on psychology and money mindset. 

5. Udemy Complete Investing Course

Udemy is a great resource for financial courses taught by a variety of lecturers with extensive experience in their fields. In Udemy’s Complete Investing Course, you’ll learn how to diversify your portfolio and grow your wealth. Topics like stocks, ETFs, index and mutual funds will all be covered in the course. For $18.99, you can take advantage of this 11-hour course. 

6. Brigham Young University’s Personal Finance Courses

BYU has a variety of different levels of personal finance courses including courses that include beginner, intermediate, and advanced topics. Courses offered include investing, retirement, and courses for students and young single and married adults. Plus, all of the courses are free.
