Medicare Advantage Plans Are Restoring Benefits That Paused Last Fall

November and December are often expensive months for seniors on Medicare Advantage. You may have gone to the dentist only to find your coverage was denied. You might have tried to order vitamins and found your card balance was zero. This happens because many “extra” benefits have strict annual dollar limits. Once you hit that cap, the plan pauses your coverage until the ball drops.

The good news is that January 1st marked a total system reset. All those benefits that ran dry in the fall are now fully replenished. You have a fresh bucket of money to spend on your health right now. It is critical to use these funds early before other costs eat up your budget. Here are the specific benefits that have just been restored to your plan.

The Dental Maximum Reset

Most Advantage plans cap dental coverage at $1,000 or $1,500 per year. If you had a root canal last summer, you likely hit this limit fast. This forced you to pay out-of-pocket for any cleaning scheduled in December. As of this month, your full annual maximum is available again.

You can now schedule that crown or filling that you postponed to save money. Call your dentist immediately to book an appointment before their spring schedule fills up completely. Using this benefit early protects you from emergencies later in the year. Do not wait until you have a toothache to check your balance.

The OTC Allowance Refill

Your Over-the-Counter (OTC) card is one of the most popular perks of modern plans. However, these funds often operate on a strict quarterly or monthly use-it-or-lose-it basis. If you drained your account buying cold medicine in November, you were stuck paying cash. The new year has triggered a fresh deposit into your OTC wallet.

Many plans have also increased the allowance amount to account for inflation in 2026. You likely have $50 to $100 sitting in your account right now waiting to be spent. You can stock up on toothpaste, pain relievers, and first aid supplies today. Check your plan’s catalog for new eligible items added for the 2026 plan year.

The Vision Hardware Allowance

Medicare generally covers one pair of glasses after cataract surgery, but Advantage plans offer more. They usually provide a yearly or bi-yearly allowance for frames and contact lenses. If you used this benefit last spring, you were ineligible for a new pair in the fall. That restriction has likely lifted with the start of the new calendar year.

You can now go get an updated eye exam and order new glasses. This is especially important if your prescription has changed slightly since your last visit. Using this benefit now ensures you have good vision for driving all winter long. Do not let hundreds of dollars in optical benefits sit unused on your card.

The Transportation Ride Renewal

Non-emergency medical transportation is a lifeline for seniors who no longer drive. These plans typically limit you to 24 or 30 one-way trips per calendar year. Active seniors often burn through these rides by October, leaving them stranded for holiday appointments. Your ride counter has officially reset to zero for 2026.

You now have a full allocation of trips to get to your doctor or pharmacy. You can book rides for routine checkups without worrying about running out later. It is a fresh start that restores your independence during the icy months. Confirm your specific ride limit with your plan’s transportation broker this week.

The Flex Card “Wallet” Reload

Many plans now offer a “Flex Card” that bundles dental, vision, and hearing funds together. This gives you a single bucket of money, like $500, to spend how you choose. If you spent it all on hearing aids last year, your card was empty. That flexible spending balance has been reloaded for the new year.

You can now use those funds for a different need, like a new pair of dentures. The flexibility allows you to prioritize whatever health issue is bothering you most right now. Check your balance online to see exactly how much cash is available. Treat this card like a debit card that expires next December.

The Physical Therapy Cap

Original Medicare has no hard cap on therapy, but Advantage plans sometimes require authorization. If you had a long rehab stint last year, you might have faced approval hurdles. The new year often resets the “medical necessity” clock for chronic conditions. Your doctor can submit a new plan of care for 2026 coverage.

This allows you to resume sessions for back pain or arthritis management. You can access the gym or pool therapy that keeps you mobile. It is a chance to build strength before the gardening season begins. Verify your copay amount, as it may have changed for the new year.

Plan Your Spending Strategy

These benefits are part of the premium you pay every month. Leaving them untouched is exactly what the insurance company hopes you will do. Map out your dental, vision, and hearing needs for the next six months. Schedule the big appointments now while your funding is fresh and guaranteed.
