Memorial Day 2025 is fast approaching. Do you need to get something mailed out before the end of the month? If so, then it’s important to make sure to ask yourself, “Is the Post Office Closed On Memorial Day 2025?” After all, it’s really annoying when you get everything ready and head to the post office only to realize that it is closed!

When Is Memorial Day 2025?

Memorial Day, previously known as Decoration Day, is an important federal holiday in the United States. The holiday is dedicated to honoring the brave men and women who lost their lives while serving in the country’s armed forces.

The origins of Memorial Day can be traced back to the Civil War, which claimed the lives of countless soldiers on both sides of the conflict. In the years following the war, communities across the country began holding ceremonies and decorating the graves of fallen soldiers as a way to honor their sacrifice. Over time, Decoration Day evolved into what we now know as Memorial Day. The holiday was officially recognized by the federal government in 1971.

Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday of May. This year it falls on May 26, 2025.

Is The Post Office Closed On Memorial Day 2025?

Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States. The United States Postal Service (USPS) generally follows the federal holiday schedule when it comes to closures. In other words, most “bank holidays” are observed by the post office.

This means that yes, on Monday, May 26, 2025, the post office is closed. There will be no mail deliveries or customer service available.

Dropping Off Mail at the Post Office on Memorial Day 2025

Some self-service options could be available at your post office. For example, you might be able to check your mail if you have a post office box. This varies by location; some lock their doors for the holidays.

If the lobby of your post office is open, then you might be able to use kiosks to purchase stamps, etc. However, there won’t be any employees there to assist you.

Of course, you can use drop boxes to leave your mail. It’s important to note that any mail dropped off during the holiday using self-service options or drop boxes will not be processed until USPS employees return on Tuesday, May 27, 2025.

Therefore, if time-sensitive mail is a concern, it’s recommended to visit the post office before the holiday. Depending on the location, post offices may have Saturday hours. Therefore, customers may be able to visit on Saturday before the holiday. Otherwise, you can definitely go to the post office on Friday before the holiday. Is the post office closed on Memorial Day 2025?

Just remember that it might be busier than usual because you aren’t the only one asking.

Why Does The Post Office Close for Memorial Day?

The closure of USPS on federal holidays is due to the fact that many federal agencies, including USPS, are closed on these days. Additionally, many businesses and institutions also observe federal holidays, so it makes sense for USPS to follow suit.

By closing on federal holidays, USPS is able to give its employees time off to celebrate and spend time with their families and loved ones. It also allows USPS to save on operating costs by reducing energy usage and limiting wear and tear on vehicles and equipment.

By closing specifically on Memorial Day, USPS is able to give its employees a much-needed break to celebrate and honor the sacrifices of fallen soldiers. Moreover, there are a lot of retired military members who work for the post office. Therefore, it’s nice to honor them by closing for the day.

2025 Post Office Holidays

The USPS has closed for three federal holidays so far in 2025: New Year’s Day and MLK Jr. Day in January, as well as President’s Day in February.

Memorial Day 2025 is the next holiday for which the post office will close.

Then there are seven more federal holidays this year when the post office will be closed:

  1. Juneteenth
  2. Independence Day
  3. Labor Day
  4. Columbus Day
  5. Veterans Day
  6. Thanksgiving Day
  7. Christmas Day

Note that depending on what day of the week those holidays fall on, the post office might be closed the day before, the day of, or the day after. For example, when the holiday falls on a Sunday, the post office is already closed for the weekend and so typically observes the holiday by also closing on the Monday following the holiday.

Holidays When The Post Office Is Typically Open

Although the post office is closed for Memorial Day and other federal holidays, there are some other common holidays when the post office is open and provides regular mail delivery and customer service. These include:

  1. Valentine’s Day – February 14
  2. St. Patrick’s Day – March 17
  3. Halloween – October 31
  4. Christmas Eve – December 24
  5. New Year’s Eve – December 31

The post office is also typically closed on Sundays, which means any holiday that falls on a Sunday will be a day that USPS is out of service.

Will you have to plan anything around the upcoming post office closure?
