Are Post Offices Open or Closed on Columbus Day 2025?

As holidays come and go, it can be hard to keep track of what’s open and what’s not. The confusion only grows around Columbus Day, when many offices and retailers follow different schedules. Since the holiday falls on a weekday — and Monday, October 13, 2025, is a day the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) typically operates — many people wonder: Are post offices open on Columbus Day?

Is the Post Office Open on Columbus Day?

No, post offices will be closed on Columbus Day 2025.

Columbus Day, observed on the second Monday of October, is a federal holiday. That means all U.S. Postal Service offices and facilities will close in observance of the holiday. Postal employees will have the day off, and no regular mail delivery or pickup services will occur on Monday, October 13.

There may be limited exceptions for overnight or Priority Mail Express deliveries, but standard mail services will pause for the day. USPS customer service lines will also be closed.

Which USPS Services Are Still Available?

While post office counters won’t be staffed, several self-service options remain available to customers. On Columbus Day, you can still:

  • Access PO Boxes (if your local branch offers lobby access after hours).
  • Drop off prepaid packages in collection boxes or self-service mail slots.
  • Use self-service kiosks, available at select locations, to weigh packages, print postage, and ship items.
  • Buy stamps from vending machines or participating retail partners.

These limited services function much like they would on a Sunday, so if you typically rely on self-service equipment, you can still take care of some shipping needs.

What About Columbus Day Weekend?

For Columbus Day weekend 2025, here’s what to expect:

  • Saturday, October 11: Most post offices will be open during normal Saturday business hours. Smaller branches may have shorter schedules.
  • Sunday, October 12: Post offices will be closed as usual.
  • Monday, October 13: All post offices nationwide will be closed in observance of Columbus Day.

Regular mail delivery resumes on Tuesday, October 14, 2025.

How to Confirm Your Local Branch Hours

Since USPS branches vary in weekend and holiday operations, the best way to verify your location’s hours is to check the USPS Find Locations tool. You can also use the USPS mobile app or call your local branch directly to confirm lobby access and available services.

Get Your USPS Business Done Ahead of Time

If you’re wondering, “Is the post office open on Columbus Day 2025?” the answer is no — post offices will be closed, and mail delivery will pause for the day. However, you can still access self-service kiosks, PO Boxes, and drop boxes at many locations.

To avoid any mailing delays, plan ahead and send time-sensitive packages before Saturday, October 11, to ensure they’re on their way before the long weekend.
