You may have heard Walmart’s slogan since 2008, “save money, live better.” Sam Walton, the company’s founder adopted the slogan because he believed that Walmart delivered quality products to their customers at a lower price so that they could enjoy living a better life. You too can adopt the same principles to transform your own life. Here we’ll discuss how having the same mantra can make a difference in your day-to-day life.

1. Focus Your Mind and Habits

Mantras are typically used in yoga practice. They help us focus and reduce worrisome thoughts. The word mantra actually comes from Sanskrit, where “man” means “mind” and “tra” means “release”. Often these are simple sounds that are repeated or chanted for optimal effect.

2. Lower Your Financial Stress

If you commit to the mantra of “save money, live better,” you’ll likely reduce your financial stress. Often the things that we think will make us happy like impulsive spending and consumerism are fleeting and we are left with the stress of the unnecessary financial burden. Living with the stress of living paycheck to paycheck can eat away at your relationships and even your health. According to Bank of America data, more than half of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck. By saving more money to live better, you can break this cycle.

3. Live Below Your Means

Have you ever tried underconsumption? There are many freedoms in not participating in consumerism and just having what you need. This takes a perspective shift to accomplish, but can help you live better. There’s simplicity and peace in not focusing on material possessions and instead focusing on gratitude and joy.

4. Make Substitutions, Not Sacrifices

Just because you are trying to save more doesn’t mean that you have to sacrifice. Instead of walking into a grocery store and filling your cart blindly, you can pay attention to sales and coupons to save money. If you love to read, you don’t have to deprive yourself of new books. Why not utilize your library’s online catalog to find your favorite new titles? When we shift our behaviors slightly we can still enjoy life fully, but make smarter money decisions.

5. Create an Abundance Mindset

Imagine having enough money for everything you could need. In an emergency, you’ll never have to wonder how you’ll pay for car repairs or medical expenses. If a friend is having a destination wedding, you’ll be able to attend without worrying about finances. By practicing save more money to live better, you can shift your money mindset from one of scarcity to abundance. With this mantra, you’ll have gratitude for all that you have and never feel like you are going without.

6. Get Creative with Entertainment

Saving more can actually open up opportunities for new experiences that you might not have tried otherwise. For instance, you can take advantage of free concerts, art shows, or farmer’s markets in your area. For the most part, there are always less expensive options for entertainment if you’re willing to look. You can even find less expensive alternatives for vacations and day trips.

7. Leverage Your Passions

Trying to save money and live better can help you tap into your passions. Maybe by trying to reduce how much you eat out, you’ll ignite a love of cooking. By limiting shopping for new clothes, you may find that you enjoy sewing or upcycling items you already have. Having hobbies can reduce your stress, improve, your mental health, and improve your well-being.

8. Set Yourself Up for The Future

With the mantra save money live better, you’ll be setting yourself up for a brighter financial future. Saving more can mean retiring earlier and living better in retirement. You may find that you hit the number you need to retire with more ease and less worrying if you will have enough money in your golden years.

9. Improve More than Just Your Finances

Not only will your financial health improve, but you’ll probably start to apply the same practices to other areas of your life. Affirmations, visualizations, and mantras can help you in your career, improve your relationships, and even help you achieve better physical and mental health. Once you learn how to change your thoughts and perspectives, many aspects of your life can improve.

Applying the Mantra Save Money, Live Better

Taking control of your thoughts, perspectives, and habits can have a significant impact on your financial health. Small shifts can make a big difference and will help you save money and live better. Do you have any mantras? How do you save money?
